Meat sauce can sound a little intimidating the first time I saw that it called for three different kinds of ground meat I panicked. I’d never bought ground veal before, but once I made it with all three types I knew I’d never go back to just ground beef!
Ingredients
½ cup olive oil
8 ounces ground beef
8 ounces ground veal
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
4 tablespoons dried basil
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
1 (28-ounce) can tomato puree
Follow these easy steps
Step One
Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. When it is shimmering, add the ground beef and veal, and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until the meat is browned.
Step Two
Stir in the red wine and let simmer for about 1 minute, until mostly evaporated
Step Three
Reduce the heat to low and add the crushed tomatoes and tomato puree to the pot, stirring to incorporate. Reduce the heat to the lowest simmer possible and place a lid on the pot slightly ajar. Simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
That is it. Four easy steps and you will have a giant pot of the most delicious meat sauce you’ve ever tasted.
Better than any restaurant!
If I want to keep it easy I just boil up some spaghetti or ravioli to serve it over or if I am feeding a hungry crowd I will layer it in a lasagna or if I am cooking for my girlfriend’s who always seems to be watching their carb intake I put it on a bed of roasted asparagus.
I always have some leftover, so if the next day I like to heat some sauce in a shallow pan and crack a couple eggs, letting them poach in the sauce. Serve that with some crusty bread and you have breakfast lunch or dinner!
