If you think that excess sodium might be the culprit for your midnight visits to the toilet, then good news—it’s not the hardest thing in the world to cut down on. Here are some of the simplest ways you can reduce that salt intake:
- When cooking at home, consider replacing added salt with spices like ginger or garlic. These flavors are much healthier and really can pack quite a punch!
- Canned veggies – like beans, in particular – are much better to be consumed when in the low sodium variety. If you already have a stockpile of normal canned goods, then simply rinse the legumes in a strainer before cooking.
- When eating out, do your best to keep fried or breaded foods to a minimum. Instead, go for dishes that are steamed, boiled, broiled, or grilled. As an added bonus, you’ll see a serious decrease in calorie intake, too!
- If you are looking to make a quick change in your sodium consumption, first replace your salty standbys with potassium rich foods like bananas, beans, yogurt, cantaloupe, and potatoes.
